The domestic grinding stone is the perfect partner for your kitchen sharpening needs, and is made from natural stone. See instructions at the bottom of this page.
What would a kitchen be without a proper sharpening tool? The domestic grinding stone is designed with precise criteria for high quality as well as practicality. The origin of the stone is quite interesting, as it is quarried in Pirkanmaa, and this stone material has been used for sharpening different types of blades for several hundred years, so it doesn't get more traditional than this. The quarried stone is cut to shape and then finished by grinding.
The material is nothing but the stone itself, clay shale, i.e. phyllite. Phyllite is formed by the recrystallisation, or metamorphism, of rocks. All that is actually added to the stone is a string, which makes it easy to hang on the wall of a barbecue roof, for example.
The stone is cut to the exact length to fit all our blades. It's a sturdy kitchen staple, but not too clumsy to take on a camping trip.
This stone is used for sharpening with water, i.e. the stone is moistened with water before the sharpening phase. A knife sharpened with a wet stone is by far the sharpest knife in the world, and is overshadowed by all kinds of sharpening machines and other market sharpening sticks. When using this stone, it's good to remember the correct sharpening angle, but once you do, the result is downright smile-inducing.
In addition to a chef's knife and a chopper, a domestic grinding stone will sharpen scissors, a cheese knife or a fish hook! This is a great gift if you're not a keen sharpener yourself.
Care instructions: rinse the stone after use and dry with a cloth.
