What would a kitchen be without a proper sharpener? The traditional Finnish Grindstone has been designed with high criteria to be of high in quality but also very practical. The origin of the stone is quite interesting, as it is found and mined from Pirkanmaa. The stone material in question has been used to sharpen various blades for several hundred years. Things could not become more traditional. The quarried stone is processed by cutting it into shape, after which it is finished by grinding.
The material in the stone is nothing but itself, clay mica shale, or phyllite. Phyllite is formed during the recrystallization, i.e. metamorphosis, of rock species. Only a string has actually been added to the stone, from which it is easy to hang it on the wall of a barbecue shelter, for example.
Traditional Finnish Grindstone has been cut just to the point that it is suitable for sharpening all our blades. It’s a sturdy kitchen defense player, but not too clumsy to take with you on an outing.
This stone is sharpened with water, i.e. the stone is moistened with water before the sharpening step. A knife sharpened with a wet stone is by far the brightest point in its sharpness, and overshadows all kinds of sharpening machines and other supermarket sharpening sticks. When using this stone, it’s good to remember the right sharpening angle, but when you remember, the end result is downright smiling.
In addition to the Chef’s Knife and Chopper, this Finnish Grinding Stone sharpens scissors, a cheese planer or a fishing hook! This is a great gift idea if you’re not a tough sharpener yourself.
